Building Fluent Readers

Fluency is such an important skill for emerging readers. It is important to improve fluency in all students as they become better readers. We use a fluency program in our classroom that involves a few poems each week.

We pick two poems every week to work on as a class. The first day we read the poems aloud modeling different ways to read them and demonstrating fluency in terms of expression and pacing. The students make observations on the poems and comment on how to read them fluently. Some students read the poems or parts of the poems aloud for the class.

The second day we break the students into groups and they practice reading the poems together. They make sure they all read with speed and smoothness.

At the end of the week the class will present their poems. By this time the students are much more comfortable with the poems and can read them fluently. The students know that they are supposed to always read the words, even if they think they have the poem memorized.

This weekly routine improves students’ fluency in all reading areas and across all subjects.  It also makes them aware that fluency is an important skill for good readers to master.
