We Are Thankful!

Thanksgiving is a time for reflection in first grade! Today, we read the book Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks by Margaret Sutherland. As an extension to the text, we took some time to think about what we are thankful for this year. Mrs. Soszko and Mrs. Haradon are very thankful for a wonderful group of first graders and their dedicated families!

We wish you all a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving!

Buddy Reading

Paired (Buddy) reading is a research-based fluency strategy used with readers to improve fluency. In this strategy, students read aloud to each other. When using partners, more fluent readers can be paired with less fluent readers, or children who read at the same level can be paired to reread a story they have already read. Paired reading can be used with any book, taking turns reading by sentence, paragraph, page or chapter.

Clouds

When I See Clouds

Puffy cumulus clouds mean sunny days.
Whispy cirrus clouds mean rain's in store.
Foggy, gray stratus clouds; low in the sky they stay.
And black nimbus clouds mean it's going to pour.
But what I see when I see clouds
is a hippo, a sheep, and a moose with horns,
and cotton candy-giant-size-and sometimes even an unicorn!

Air Exploration Day

During our Air Exploration morning the students looked for
evidence of moving air.  They constructed pinwheels,
paper airplanes, and whirligigs.  Our scientists discovered
properties of air by observing interactions of air with objects.  They observed bubbles under water and learned about air and its relationship to weather.

Our scientists learned that:
  •    Air is a gas and is all around us.
  •    Air is matter and takes up space.
  •    Air makes objects move.
  •    Air moves from place to place. Moving air is wind.
  •    Air resistance affects how things move.
  •    Weather describes conditions in the air outside.
  •    Wind is moving air.
  •    Wind can lift objects up into the sky.
  •    Bubbles are air underwater.
