French Flag Research

We started our journey to France today! To celebrate our new adventure, we researched and did our first entry in our cultural portfolio about the French flag! We are using our district research process, Independent Investigation Method, to complete our research! Today, we learned the national flag of France is a tricolor flag featuring three vertical bands of blue, white, and red. Blue and red are the traditional colors of Paris. White is an ancient French color. Multiple flags are commonly displayed on public buildings!

Life in a Woodland Forest

Enter a forest and you have entered a cooler and quieter world.  There may be no crowds, but forests are full of life.  There are animals big and small hunting for food, making homes, and raising their young.  There are trees and flowers, and, if you look closely, there are mosses, lichens, and fungi too.

To most people, a woodland forest is a place where lots of trees grow.  But a forest is a whole lot more than that.  It is a community of many different kinds of plants and animals that interact with each other and the environment.

On April 30th our class will have a field experience at Stillman Nature Center.  At Stillman, we will explore the amazing woodland habitat and interact with the organisms that make up this ecosystem.

Check out the outstanding research our First Grade Frogs have collected in preparation for this trip!

Life in a Pond

A pond might look quiet and still, but take a closer look.  You'll see it's a small, busy world.  Animals depend on the pond for many things, like water to drink...and plants to eat.  Many animals begin life in the pond.  A dragonfly nymph will grow underwater and become a dragonfly.  Tadpoles grow underwater to become frogs.  Wrigglers grow underwater to become mosquitoes.  Many plants grow in the pond, too.  Plants provide food and are good places for animals to hide.  Some birds build their nests in the plants.  Many animals live on the shore.  Turtles lay their eggs there.  Many animals, such as crayfish, snails, salamanders and geese live in and around a pond.

In preparation for our field experience to Stillman Nature Center, our First Grade Frogs have been collecting information relating to the pond habitat.  Check out our amazing research!
