First Graders are learning how to count, read and write within 10. Countable items are used to develop the association between the physical representation of the number, the number symbol and the number word. This week we played a fun game called, "Spot the Dot" in which students had to identify a number on a ten frame card and match that number with the number word on their "Spot the Dot" Dog. Our students had fun reading the number words and being the first to color in all of the dots on their dog.

Have You Filled A Bucket Today?
Based on the book “Have You Filled A Bucket Today?” by Carol
McCloud. We all carry an invisible
bucket that contains our feelings. When
our bucket is full, we feel great. When
our bucket is empty, we feel sad. A bucket
filler is someone who says or does nice things for other people. By doing this, they are filling other people’s
buckets and filling their own bucket at the same time. On the other hand, a bucket dipper says or
does things to cause other people to feel bad.
A bucket dipper empties their bucket when they say and do hurtful
things. We are all learning to be bucket
fillers, not dippers.

Graphs Galore
Displaying data is an essential part of mathematics because
when information is displayed in graph form, it is easier to read and
interpret. Through data collection,
students are able to collect, organize, display, analyze, and interpret data. This gives the learners the ability to make
decisions, predictions, and comparisons.
This past week, our students had several opportunities to create, read,
interpret and identify the parts of a bar graph. Enjoy the wonderful learning that took place this
week in first grade!

Every Kid Needs A Champion
As educators, we take great pride in our students and are honored to be their teachers. Each year brings new changes and exciting adventures. We look forward to an amazing year ahead and we hope and pray that we can be a "CHAMPION" for each unique learner that enters our room. Take a moment and watch the powerful, inspiring message that Dr. Tom Leonard shared with all District 220 Educators at our Welcome Back meeting on Monday.
