"Little House in the Big Woods" - Laura Ingalls Wilder

Little House in the Big Woods is a children's novel by Laura Ingalls Wilder published in 1932. The book is the first in the Little House series, which is based on decades-old memories of Wilder's early childhood in the Big Woods near Pepin, Wisconsin, in the late 19th century.

Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association named Little House in the Big Woods one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children."  It was one of the "Top 100 Chapter Books" of all time in a 2012 poll by School Library Journal.  Little House in the Big Woods is also a Common Core State Standards exemplar text.

Our first grade class has begun a read aloud adventure of Little House in the Big Woods

Wolves and panthers and bears roam the deep Wisconsin woods in the late 1870s. In those same woods, Laura Ingalls lives with Pa and Ma, and her sisters, Mary and Baby Carrie, in a snug little house built of logs. Pa hunts and traps. Ma makes her own cheese and butter. At night, Pa’s fiddle playing brings the family together around the cozy fire.
