How-To Books on Safety

As a Common Core State Standards expectation and a requirement of our District 220 Health curriculum, first graders are expected to learn about safety! As part of the curriculum, the students read and make How-To safety books! We started our writing instruction using the Lucy Calkins' How-To Book unit combined with instruction on being safe in school, on the playground, in the home, and on transportation. We will return to cover water and weather safety in our science unit on Air and Weather! The children enjoyed reading our class sets of safety books and making their own class safety book: How To Be Safe At Hough Street School! We will put the book out in the hall at conferences for all to enjoy!
